Oceans and Rivers

The Story

‘Oceans & Rivers’ is a celebration of the free-flowing energy and movement within water.

Through undulating waves and ripples evokes a sense of calm and serenity. Oceans & Rivers captures the essence of water through its most fluid state, highlighting its beautiful relationship with light through reflections that sparkle on the water’s surface. The concept was developed through visiting UK rivers and seas to observe the visual aspect of this medium and capture the human emotional response to the atmosphere. Watercolour paintings and patterned drawings teased out the essence of the narrative, where a final composition and form started to emerge.

Situated in the Entrance Hall to a private residential interior space in Central London, the sculptural lighting installation is a spectacular focal point upon arrival to the apartment, and contains a variety of suspended textured glass and hammered brass components which shimmer and glisten next to the hammered shell light units. The work has a great emphasis on surface texture to push the light in lots of different directions allowing for beautiful reflections such as in real-life waters.

The composition is light and airy with hints of swirled-teal glass pebble shapes for pops of colour, surrounded by clear glass to focus on light-play. Our glassmaker Elliot Walker, experimented with a variety of unique tools for the perfect surface texture, however found the most relative to the narrative was a wire brush to roughen the surface and scatter the light to perfection.

For the hammered brass decorative elements, jeweller and metalsmith, Eleanor Corp, hammered our 0.4mm sheet brass into curved forms with a soft dappled effect which were then clear-lacquered for protection against tarnishing. She was also the skilled craftsperson behind the handforming of the light unit shades, which sit at varying levels of the composition to spread the functional light output. A warm 2700K colour temperature was used for a settled ambience and to work alongside the wall light temperature for consistency.

The work took one day to install due to an easy to install ceiling plate and pre-cut string lengths that were populated on site using a mapping template.
